Here at Schmitt, if you can imagine it, you can achieve it! We hold our students to high expectations and encourage them to reach for the stars. Our school-wide focus is on Common Core State Standards, rigor, academic language and promoting communication and collaboration by utilizing appropriate digital and other resources. In addition, our students are provided with physical education, art and music classes. We also have after school programing: SOAR and SCORES. With over 170 pieces of technology solely dedicated to student-use and promethium boards in every classroom, our students leave Schmitt with the skills to be successful in middle school, high school and beyond.

We are very proud of our diverse student population! With approximately 10 different home languages spoken at Schmitt, about 60% of our students are emerging bilinguals. To ensure student success, we offer TNLI (Transitional Native Language Instruction) and ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction. Our staff is committed to supporting students as they learn English at school, while honoring and cultivating the native languages and cultures that they bring from home. Bi-literate students is the goal for all emerging bilinguals.

We welcome students with disabilities and guarantee high-quality instruction for all. Our students not only receive reading and math interventions, but also receive enrichment-based interventions, specific to every child’s needs. Schmitt has partnered with the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) to provide additional support to students and families, including student and family counseling that extends beyond the school year into the summer months.

We are a community of lifelong learners and have a staff dedicated to continuous learning and improvement. Our staff receives professional development regularly, which allows them to continuously gain knowledge and skills to improve their teaching techniques. In 2014-15, a passion for teaching and the desire to learn makes Schmitt’s staff a leading example in education as we participate in the Differentiated Leadership Cohort.  As part of this opportunity, teachers will be building trust and capacity in an environment where we utilize feedback to grow in our practice.  Honoring each teacher’s growth by practicing professionalism, and providing support and resources.

Our “classroom families” go beyond our students and their teacher; parents and families are also an integral part of student growth and development.

  • During our kindergarteners’ monthly parent days, parents can see what their student is learning and experience their growth.
  • Parent/teacher home visits are important for our staff to develop a more meaningful relationship with their students; it allows a personal connection with Schmitt families.
  • We are proud to offer English classes  provided to parents through the Community College of Denver.

“Be a Buddy, Not a Bully!” is our mantra here at Schmitt. We care for one another by standing up for ourselves and our peers. Our students and staff take pride in their bully-free school environment. We “fill each other’s buckets” by supporting positive behavior and being kind to one another. Patty Gonzales, principal of Schmitt, and Karla Gruenwald, assistant principal, along with all staff members, encourage Schmitt students’ culture of care at monthly RISE Assemblies by recognizing students who exhibit positive behaviors and exemplify the positive Schmitt culture.

Caring for each other goes beyond school hours at Schmitt. Through a partnership with Sprouts Farmers Market, our Backpack Program ensures that our students never go home hungry. Every week, participating students get a backpack of food for their family during the weekend.

Schmitt’s community garden is a wonderful addition to our school.  We are all able to enjoy the vegetables we grow during lunch and snack time. Students appreciate their outdoor classroom where they learn to care about where their food comes from and the importance of community.

Come experience Schmitt’s culture of care!
